Not “loading slowly,” but gone. It works for a friend in another city, but not for you. Or a different situation: you go on vacation, open your usual streaming service, and half the library has disappeared because it is “not available in your region.” Or the most ordinary case of all: you connect to Wi-Fi in a café and briefly wonder whether someone can see what you are doing. In all three cases, friends give you the same advice. Get a VPN. But what a VPN actually is, how a VPN connection works, what it gives you, and whether it really solves all three problems at once — nobody explains, because explanations are boring, while articles online are written either for sysadmins or to lead you to an ad at the bottom of the page. I have read enough of them to think I could probably rank them by uselessness.

I’ll explain it the way I would explain it over a table to a friend who does not understand any of this and does not particularly want to. First the simple version, then a little deeper, then the technical details — stop wherever you have had enough, I won’t take it personally. And one disclaimer up front: I work for a service that sells this very VPN, so I obviously have a direct interest. I’ll still try to be honest about what a VPN cannot do, because it cannot do quite a lot, and pretending otherwise is a reliable way to disappoint someone a week later.

What Is a VPN? Start With the Simple Version

Imagine a huge shopping mall at rush hour. You walk from the entrance to the store you need, and everyone can see you: security cameras, shop assistants, random passers-by, even the woman with the stroller you passed by the escalator. People can see where you turned, how long you stood by a display, and whom you greeted. Now imagine that the same mall has a covered corridor with solid walls running through it: you enter it at the entrance and emerge at the store you need, while from outside people can see only that someone went in and someone came out. Nobody can see what you did inside or exactly where you went. That is a VPN in simple terms. A virtual private network: a protected passage through the shared, public internet.

Technically, it works a little differently, but the idea is the same. Instead of going directly to a website through your ISP’s network, your device first establishes an encrypted connection to an intermediate server, and all your traffic is sent there. The server unwraps it and sends it onward in its own name — using its own IP address and appearing to be in its own country. The response comes back the same way.

[Image: main VPN tunnel diagram — device, encrypted channel, VPN server, destination website]

There are really just two consequences, and they explain most of the technology’s popularity. First, your ISP and the network owner can no longer see where you are going. Second, the website sees the server’s address rather than yours. Everything else follows from those two things.

How the Tunnel Works: Encryption, Encapsulation, and the Exit Node

Now for the technical version. Three things happen inside the tunnel, and understanding what each one does is useful, if only so you do not have to argue about it in the comments later. I actually confused the first two myself for a long time and thought they were basically the same thing — until I had to explain them out loud and discovered that I did not really understand them.

Encryption. Data is turned into a meaningless stream of bytes that can be decrypted only at the other end of the tunnel. Modern algorithms such as AES-256 and ChaCha20 are not something you simply brute-force: it is not about having a powerful enough computer, but about having more time than anyone has. There is no magic involved. The same mathematics protects your banking app, and you trust it without giving it a second thought.

Encapsulation. The word sounds scary, but the idea is simple: your encrypted packet is placed inside another packet with its own header and destination address. Think of a suitcase checked as luggage — it has a tag for the final airport, and the sorting staff read the tag, not what you packed inside. The equipment along the way sees the outer wrapper and routes the packet according to it.

Exit node. This is the server where the tunnel ends. It removes the wrapper, decrypts the request, and sends it into the open internet in its own name. Here is an important point that took me a while to fully appreciate and that I now repeat whenever I can: your ISP stops seeing your traffic, but the operator of the exit node starts seeing it. You are not eliminating trust; you are moving it. Once you understand that, the question “who exactly am I trusting?” stops being theoretical, and free services with unknown owners start looking rather less attractive. At the very least, read the privacy policy; if there is no policy at all, that is already an answer.

Three Points of View: The Website, the ISP, and You

The same connection looks completely different from three different perspectives. Let’s break it down.

What the website sees. It sees the VPN server’s address instead of yours, and therefore a different country and provider. Everything else remains: your browser, its version, screen resolution, system language, cookies from previous visits, and your account if you are logged in. This is the key point that breaks many expectations: changing your IP address does not make you a new person. For more on what can actually be learned from an address, see our IP check guide.

What the ISP sees. It sees that you connected to a server and exchanged data with it. Volume, time, duration. It does not see the contents. It does not see which websites you visit through the tunnel. In other words, the fact that you are using a VPN can generally be detected, while what you are doing through it cannot — and people confuse these two things all the time.

What you see. Honestly? Almost nothing. A status-bar icon and a few percent less speed. A properly configured tunnel should be almost invisible, which is probably the best compliment you can give it.

[Image: “without VPN / with VPN” comparison — what the ISP can see in each case]

What a VPN Protects — and What It Does Not

This is the most important section of the article, and if I could force someone to read only one part, this would be it. VPNs come with so many expectations that disappointment is almost inevitable unless you understand the boundaries in advance. I used to think a VPN could do more too.

Task

Does it solve it?

Explanation

Hide traffic from your ISP and Wi-Fi owner

Yes

They see only the connection to the server, not the contents

Hide your IP from websites

Yes

The website sees the exit node’s address

Bypass an IP or domain block

Yes

A common use case in Russia

Protect data on an open network

Yes

Encryption plus protection for DNS requests

Access geo-restricted content

Often

Major streaming platforms can identify data-center IP addresses

Make you anonymous

No

Cookies, browser fingerprinting, and logged-in accounts remain

Protect you from malware

No

That is the antivirus’s job; a tunnel does not inspect content

Protect you from phishing

No

If you enter a password on a fake website yourself, encryption will not help

Hide you from a service you are logged into

No

You identified yourself with your account; the IP is no longer the main issue

Stop advertising-network tracking

Partly

Your IP changes, but browser trackers remain

Speed up the internet

No

Usually the opposite, although the difference may be barely noticeable

[Image: “VPN protects / does not protect” table as a saveable card]

If you reduce it to one sentence: a VPN protects the channel, not you. Everything you deliberately do — enter passwords, log into accounts, accept cookies — remains exactly the same, and encryption has nothing to do with it. As for speed, since it made the table: on decent infrastructure, the loss is roughly 5–20 percent and is usually invisible in practice. On an overloaded or distant server, the drop can be several times, and you notice that immediately, literally from the first page. In my experience, this is where services differ, not in their marketing. If your speed has “dropped several times,” change the node first and blame the technology later.

What Types of VPNs Are There?

There is one word, but four different solutions behind it, and even people who know the subject can mix them up. I remember needing some time to sort them out myself.

Consumer VPN. This is what most people think of: an app on a phone or laptop, a subscription, and a “connect” button. The goal is to change your IP address and protect traffic. This article is mainly about this type; I’ll mention the others briefly.

Corporate remote access. An employee connects to the company network from home or while traveling and works as if they were in the office: the same network drives, internal database, and services. The purpose is the opposite of a consumer VPN: not to hide, but to get inside. See our remote access and corporate VPN guides.

Site-to-Site. It connects two entire networks rather than one person to a network — office to office, office to cloud. The tunnel stays up continuously, and users often do not even know it exists. See our guide to connecting offices.

Self-hosted. You rent a VPS and run everything yourself. The obvious advantage is complete control. The less obvious disadvantages: the IP may not live long, you have to fix everything yourself, and by Murphy’s law it will break on the exact evening when you are busy and have no desire to open a console. I run my own servers and enjoy it, but I would not put this solution on a family member’s device. If you want control without the maintenance, a dedicated server is a middle ground.

Protocols: Short Version, No Fanaticism

A protocol is the set of rules that defines how the tunnel works. There are many, but in my view only three are really relevant today. The rest are history.

WireGuard is the fastest and lightest, and I like it for purely aesthetic reasons too: little code, direct integration with the system kernel, and excellent handling of switches between Wi-Fi and mobile networks. Its only major problem is that the beginning of its sessions is too recognizable, so where traffic is filtered, it can be detected and blocked.

OpenVPN is the veteran. Slower and more resource-hungry, but compatible with almost everything, including old routers and hardware that should probably have been replaced years ago. Against filtering it holds up only slightly better than WireGuard.

VLESS with XTLS-Reality is what currently works in Russia. Strictly speaking, it is not even a conventional VPN but a transport protocol that learned to look like an ordinary visit to an ordinary website, which lets it pass where others fail. See our VLESS guide; live keys and settings are available on the VPN for Russia page.

If you do not want to study the details: live somewhere without traffic filtering — use WireGuard. Live in Russia — use VLESS. That is enough; you can skip the rest of this section.

Ten Situations Where a VPN Is Actually Useful

Not “why does the average user need a VPN?” in the abstract, but specific real-life situations. This is my list for autumn 2026; in a year, half of these will probably move around, and some may disappear entirely.

A blocked website or service. The most common reason in Russia. See our page about bypassing blocks.

Video and streaming. Videos do not load or quality drops to a slideshow — see our guides for YouTube and streaming services.

Messengers. Calls are often restricted more aggressively than text messaging. See our guide to Telegram.

AI tools and work services. Some services simply do not respond to requests from Russia — see our guides for ChatGPT and AI services.

Working with foreign systems. Task trackers, repositories, and documentation — see our work use cases.

Gaming. Servers are unavailable, ping jumps, or a store will not open — see our gaming and Steam use cases.

Public Wi-Fi. Cafés, airports, hotels. Here the tunnel protects both the contents of your traffic and the picture of your online activity.

Mobile internet. Mobile operators have their own filtering, sometimes stricter than home connections — see our guide to mobile networks.

Financial services and exchanges. Logins from an unexpected country can be treated suspiciously, so a stable IP may be useful — see our exchange access guide.

Travel. Everything worked at home, then half the services stopped working abroad. This is the reverse situation, and the same tool can solve it.

[Image: infographic showing ten VPN use cases, one icon per scenario]

How to Get Started: Four Steps

Nothing complicated — really about ten minutes. Fine, fifteen if your internet is slow and you get distracted like I do.

First — choose a service. Look at three things: which protocols it supports, whether there is a free trial, and whether support answers like real people rather than templates. The rest is detail you do not need to worry about at this stage. Our option: 14 days free, no card required.

Second — install the client. On Android and Windows I usually recommend Hiddify; on Apple devices, Streisand or Happ. It is difficult to go wrong. The full list is in the clients section.

Next, import the subscription. A subscription link, not a single key — and this is where I usually insist: the subscription automatically pulls the current server list when the infrastructure changes, while a single key has to be requested again. On a phone it is a QR code; on a computer, paste it from the clipboard.

Finally, test it. After connecting, open the VPN check page. Your IP should change and there should be no DNS leaks. Thirty seconds can reveal something you otherwise would never have noticed.

And immediately configure exceptions for Russian websites: banks and government services should bypass the tunnel, otherwise login problems may appear and you will think the VPN is broken even though it is working exactly as intended. Set it up once and forget about it. If something is unclear, typical answers are in the FAQ and support, where real people are available — I have checked.

If You Remember Only Four Things

A VPN is an encrypted channel to an intermediate server that then accesses the internet in its own name. Your ISP sees the connection, but not the contents. Websites see the server’s address instead of yours.

A VPN does not make you anonymous and does not promise to. Cookies, browser fingerprints, and your own account survive an IP change intact.

Speed may drop, but on good infrastructure the difference is barely noticeable. If it falls several times, the problem is usually the specific server, and switching nodes is the first thing to try.

Choose the protocol for the situation: WireGuard where traffic is not filtered, VLESS with Reality where it is. The latter is the practical option for Russia.

There is little point in taking any of this on faith. Take the 14-day free trial, install the app on your devices, and see how it behaves in the evening with your ISP, your hardware, and your websites. No card is required, and you can simply walk away. In my view, that is more honest than any promise in an article.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a VPN in simple terms?

A protected passage through the ordinary internet. Your device establishes an encrypted connection to a server, all traffic goes through it, and requests then reach the internet from that server’s address. Your ISP sees only the connection, while the website sees a different address instead of yours.

Does a VPN make me anonymous?

No, and this is probably the biggest misconception about the technology. It hides your IP address and traffic contents, but it does not remove cookies, browser fingerprinting, or the accounts you are logged into. Log into your email and the service still knows who you are, regardless of which country the request comes from.

Does a VPN slow down the internet?

A little — the traffic takes a longer route and encryption takes some processing time. On good infrastructure, the loss is around 5–20 percent and is usually not noticeable in everyday use. A drop of several times usually means the server is overloaded or too far away: change the node and it will often improve immediately.

Do I need a VPN at home?

It depends on what you do, and there is no universal answer. If some services you need are unavailable or you do not want your ISP to see your list of websites, then yes — this is one of the most common use cases in Russia. If everything works and privacy is not a concern, you can manage without one, but keep the option in mind for travel and open networks.

We explain what a VPN is and how a VPN tunnel works, what it protects you from and what it does not, the main VPN types and protocols, and how to get started step by step.

[533

post-44994","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.1 -
